Assessment & Development Centres

Realistic & Multi-dimensional Capabilities Assessment

Assessment & Development Centres (A&DC) are a scientific and rigorous approach to measuring effectiveness whether in current or future roles. They have been successfully used by organisations for years to select, promote, identify or develop talent.

In an A&DC, participants are placed in various job-relevant scenarios and challenges, where they are observed by multiple qualified assessors. As such, A&DC’s offer a valuable opportunity for participants to experience work relevant scenarios while demonstrating their performance on the full range of competencies in different contexts.

The effectiveness of an A&DC depends on several factors. At Phi, we combine science with years of multinational experience to provide you with impactful solutions. Find out how.

Our Assessment Toolbox

Our experts leverage multiple assessment instruments, tailored to your needs

Several assessors appraise a variety of instruments, ensuring objectivity and minimising the risk of bias. When combined, our 6 standardised assessment instruments help determine the candidate’s abilities, whether for developmental or recruitment purposes

Competency-based interviews (CBI)

Participants go through a structured interview specifically designed for the target population and assessed competencies. In a CBI, participants demonstrate their behaviours and skills by describing their approach to different scenarios through relevant examples. Our unmatched expertise in delivering impactful CBI’s is reflected in our accredited CBI certification course.

Role Play

With the help of an actor or actors, common interactive workplace scenarios and challenges are recreated, enabling the participants to demonstrate their attitude and interpersonal skills. Typical settings include a customer interaction, an employee performance review or a critical stakeholder meeting. Our experts will carefully design the setting, roles and scenarios that match your population, industry, and assessed competencies—delivering assessments that truly reflect real-world performance.

Group Activity

Nearly every job requires collaborating with others to solve problems, strategise or execute. A group activity recreates these multiple stakeholder discussions to reveal a variety of behaviours and skills. The intensity, context, roles and purpose of the meetings can vary but our experts will certainly design the scenario that fits with your needs.

Case Study and Presentation

This instrument presents a perfect opportunity for participants to demonstrate their strategic thinking, innovation and impact. Participants are presented with a complex business scenario containing multiple stakeholder challenges, financial data and strategic implications. They must read and analyse the case and prepare recommendations within strict time constraints. They subsequently present their findings to an assessor panel, defending their approach through rigorous questioning. Regardless of their function in the organisation, the participants will be provided with a case that is suitable to their level, industry and required competencies.

E-Tray

Some roles, particularly managerial ones, require reacting to a number of challenges, prioritising issues and making decisions under tight time constraints. Originally labelled In-Basket exercise, E-Tray recreates these complex, information-loaded scenarios to test a variety of competencies such as decision-making, as well as planning and organising.

Psychometrics

Phi leverages a variety of psychometric tools to provide insights about the participants’ workplace behaviour and aptitude, leading to valuable insights about their potential to perform well on a range of tasks.

All You Need to Know
About Assessment & Development Centres

Assessment and Development Centres are particularly well suited to mid-level and senior management roles, especially when evaluating senior leadership potential. They are effective in identifying high‑potential employees and future leaders across the organisation, and for senior executives, they help assess readiness for C‑suite roles.

These centres can also support key talent decisions, including graduate recruitment for entry‑level roles and the transition of technical specialists into managerial positions where leadership capability is required. Beyond selection, they are widely used to build leadership self‑awareness, support team development, and inform promotion or role‑assignment decisions with robust, evidence‑based insight.

Assessment & Development Centres are utilised in various organisational contexts. They are routinely used for selection processes, succession planning, placement and high-potential talent identification.

Assessment & Development centres have two distinct benefits:

For organisations, they offer objective, thorough assessments of talent, that help to guide decisions regarding development, hiring, and promotion. By supporting succession planning and focused training programmes, they help to pinpoint future leaders and skill shortages ensuring alignment with their culture and values.

For individuals, Assessment & Development Centres provide insightful analysis of themselves. Participants gain clarity on their areas of strength and areas for growth. This awareness aids in personal development and career planning. The different exercises also let people highlight abilities that might not be obvious in their day-to-day roles, potentially opening up new career opportunities.
